A historic Lincolnshire golf club is set to embrace one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. Plans have officially been approved for the construction of two padel courts at the Burghley Park Golf Club, located near Stamford.
The decision marks a successful turnaround for the developer, Padel X, after a previous attempt to bring the sport to the late Victorian-era site was blocked due to environmental concerns.
Overcoming Environmental Hurdles
The journey to approval wasn’t without its obstacles. In February, a primary planning application was withdrawn after Peterborough City Council planners labeled the proposed removal of seven established trees as “unacceptable.”
Learning from the initial setback, Padel X submitted a revised proposal that shifted the footprint of the courts. The new design successfully:
- Preserves the existing landscape, avoiding the loss of any established trees.
- Utilizes existing infrastructure by situating the courts within the club’s current car park.
- Enhances local biodiversity with a new landscape scheme, including woodland planting between the courts and London Road.
The revised application received the green light on December 19, clearing the way for construction to begin.
